Highlights for 2022-23

Named one of 38 Washington schools cited in a study of schools that have successfully removed barriers for Black, Latino/a, American Indian/Alaska Native students, and students experiencing poverty. Learn more.
Principal Alex Haas attended the NAESP conference in Kentucky, in her role as Washington State Distinguished Principal as well as the Distiguished Principal event in Washington D.C. where she participated in focus groups with the Department of Education. See video for more details!
Continued as an UW Demonstration Site for Inclusive Education and hosted visitors from to observe research-based practices supporting inclusion for all learners, including visitors from the Utah State Board of Education, California Department of Education, Yakima Valley, Seattle Public Schools and more.
Revisited our Cougar Learner Habits: Collaborative, Optimistic, Understanding, Growing, Aware and Resilient. Students explored how to get through the “Learning Pit,” and have ownership over their learning journeys.
Successfully increased family participation in Academic Parent Teacher Teams which promoted a true, two-way partnership between home and school that has an impact on student achievement.
Continued to build our strong enrichment programming and strengthen our community partnerships with Engageable Designs, New Futures, Lego Play-well and more!

Plans for 2023-24

Serve as OSPI Demonstration Site for Inclusive Education.
2^nd year as Cohort 1 Inclusion Site for Highline Public Schools
Implement our SEAD focus on Cougar Learner Habits, the Learning Pit, Morning Meetings and practicing social skills during daily Cougar Time blocks.
Six staff members to attend Annual Visible Learning Conference to continue to learn great strategies for supporting student ownership and accelerated practices.
Revisit key math practices and introduce Standards Based Grading, along with use of the Synergy Gradebook
Going into year 5 of APTT, or Academic Parent Teacher Teams, with a bold goal of 100% family participation in one or more events.
Affirm the rich diversity of the McMicken community through instruction on race and identity, including texts that represent our different cultures and utilizing district curated Heritage Month resources.
Engage with our longtime community partners to offer extended learning/enrichment programming, including Lego Play-Well Engineering, Engageable Designs Math, New Futures, Para Los Niños and more!

Families and community members are encouraged to participate in school activities and in educating students in school, at home and in the community.
