The Washington State Department of Health has updated its guidance for what to do when you are sick with COVID. Under the new guidance, the same measures are applied to COVID as to other respiratory viruses. This change reflects the preventive and treatment measures we have for COVID that did not exist when the pandemic began. We now have the protection of vaccines and natural immunity, as well as antiviral medications and other treatments.
To combat fentanyl-related overdose deaths and comply with new state legislation, we will be distributing Narcan to our elementary and middle schools. Our high schools have had this medication available for several years. Response training will be provided to school nurses and identified staff, as well as general training to all staff. The installation of security intercom cameras is complete or in progress at the main entrances of our schools. Office staff will be able to see and talk to external visitors from their workstation, before unlocking the main door. This system was funded by the 2016 school bond.

Cyber kidnapping is a new scam where families are tricked into paying money by making them think a loved one is in danger. The state sets standards for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Standards-based grading (SBG) measures a student’s learning of specific standards. Traditional grading gives students points for individual assignments or effort, but SBG shows a student's progress toward learning standards. SBG ensures that grades reflect a student’s academic performance and understanding of the material, rather than their behavior or effort. This results in a more accurate representation of a student’s abilities and progress.

Last year, the Evergreen Pool Aquatics Center pool gutter system started to show dramatic wear and a sharp spike in water usage of 110,000 gallons per month. Whitewater Aquatics Management partnered with our Capital Planning & Construction staff to apply for two King County Parks grants to repair the gutter!
This week staff advisory workgroups met to dig into our emerging strategic plan goals. Staff discussed what we are currently doing to meet our goals and what we could be doing. We anticipate the final goals will be brought to the Board for adoption later this spring.

Superintendent Duran rode the bus to Seahurst Elementary School with guests and staff to watch some of our brilliant JumpStart kindergarten students hop on the shiny, new bus and wave goodbye after their second day of JumpStart.

The Highline School Board voted unanimously to place the next school bond on November 2022 election ballots. If approved by 60 percent of voters, the bond would fund new schools for Evergreen, Tyee and Pacific.

The school board is slated to consider closing Southern Heights Elementary at the end of this school year due to low enrollment. Enrollment has declined by 114 students since 2013-14, and significant growth is not projected in the coming years. Current enrollment is 216 students.

This week, we experienced a delay in updating our COVID dashboard, which shows all reported positive COVID cases in our schools. Our practice is to update the dashboard every 24 hours.

Six individuals have applied for the school board position vacated by Bernie Dorsey. Dorsey stepped down in June because he is moving out of state.
The open position represents District 4, which geographically encompasses Marvista, North Hill, Madrona, and Bow Lake elementary schools, Chinook Middle School, and Tyee High School, as well as other educational sites. Applicants must live within the boundaries of District 4.
The School Board will appoint one of the candidates to the open position at its August 4 meeting. The successful candidate will be sworn in on August 18.
The public will have the opportunity to meet the applicants at a Meet and Greet on Thursday, July 29 at 5:00-6:30 via Zoom.
After 14 years on the Highline School Board, Bernie Dorsey has resigned, as he and his wife Jill are relocating out of the area. Dorsey received accolades from school board members, Superintendent Susan Enfield and the superintendent's cabinet as his resignation was accepted by the school board.
McMicken Heights is one of 38 Washington schools cited in a just-released study of schools that have successfully removed barriers for Black, Latino/a, American Indian/Alaska Native, and students experiencing poverty.
The study concluded that "these schools demonstrate that it is possible to illuminate the strengths of diverse students and dismantle unproductive systems put in place when the US public school system began."

We're pinching ourselves—it feels like a dream to have all grades back on school grounds! Today, we welcomed back more students in grades 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. It is our biggest first day yet and our second-to-last first day for the 2021-22 school year. We welcome back the rest of our secondary in-person students on Thursday. Most middle and high school students attend in two groups, either Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday. Some students who receive special education services attend four days a week.
We look forward to celebrating our graduates in-person this year. Please see the updated 2021 graduation schedule, which includes ceremonies at Highline Memorial Stadium and the Performing Arts Center. Each graduate will be allotted two guest tickets. Seating will be socially distanced and other safety protocols will be in place. All graduations will also be live-streamed.

To provide additional support to our students, we are offering unlimited, live tutoring for students in all academic subjects--24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are partnering with a company called PAPER to provide this service.

Maritime High School is a new small high school opening in September 2021 with its first 9th-grade class. Maritime is a collaborative project of Highline Public Schools, Northwest Maritime Center, Port of Seattle, and the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, with many community and industry partners engaged to support our students. The new school will connect students to project-based learning centered on the environment, marine science and maritime careers.

It is our responsibility as adults is to make sure that all students are welcomed and valued. This includes the students we serve who are transgender, gender non-binary and gender non-conforming.
Due to rising costs and federal regulations, the price of school meals will increase by 25¢ starting this fall. Students will pay $1.75 for breakfast, $3.00 for elementary lunch and $3.25 for lunch in middle and high school. Adults who wish to purchase lunch can do so for $4.00.
All Highline children can eat free breakfast, lunch and snacks during the summer through the federally-funded Summer Food Program. A child does not need to be a Highline student to participate.
