Student Success by Subject

To ensure all students are ready for success after high school, the Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills students will need to be successful.

SCIENCE

Science sequences may differ if a school has a special program.

Chemistry - Physical, Space and Earth Science

  • Atoms and bonding, matter and energy in chemical reactions, nuclear reactions in earth and space, and human impacts on earth systems. discussions on ideas within texts.

Physics - Physical and Earth Science

  • Forces and motion, energy transfers and transformations, energy in earth systems, waves, and electricity and magnetism.

Biology - Life and Earth Science

  • Study molecules to organisms, ecosystems, heredity, biological evolution and human sustainability.

 

LANGUAGE ARTS

Writing

  • Write arguments, explanatory texts and poetry.
  • Synthesize analysis and research.
  • Use the writing process to independently develop ideas.

Literary Text

  • Trace the development of ideas in texts through evidence. • Analyze the impact of author’s choices in craft and structure.
  • Prepare for and sustain extended discussions on ideas within texts.

Informational Text

  • Use informational text to deepen and develop analysis of fiction.
  • Determine and analyze craft and structure.
  • Trace and evaluate integration of knowledge and ideas.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING

  • Practice emotional intelligence skills in themselves and with others: recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing and regulating emotions.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving and responsible decision-making skills that use multiple viewpoints.
  • Reflect on progress toward goals
  • Make revisions as needed to address growth and build on strengths.
  • Advocate with diverse audiences to express thoughts to resolve conflicts with peers.  
  • Examine biases and establish/maintain relationships with people of varying backgrounds and identities.

CONTEMPORARY GLOBAL ISSUES

  • Inquire about topics related to cultural identity, human rights, migration, environment sustainability, economic development, peace and conflict, and activism
  • Analyze global current events through geography, economics, history and civics lenses.
  • Evaluate sources based on credibility, validity, bias, and corroboration
  • Integrate different forms of primary and secondary texts and media to form a holistic view of an event
  • Write in the style of a social scientist or historian using precise language and formal academic style.

WORLD LANGUAGE

  • Use proficiency- based strategies to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in world language, heritage or dual language classes.
  • Study the products, practices and perspectives of the target culture.

MATH

Algebra 1

  • Number and Quantity: extend knowledge on The Real Number System, use Quantities to reason and solve problems.
  • Algebra: build, interpret, and use algebraic symbols to describe mathematical and real-world context, emphasizing concepts and procedures.
  • Functions: analyze and use different representations to describe and build relationships between quantities.
  • Modeling: understand real life problems through mathematic and statistical models.
  • Statistics and Probability: use data to make real world decisions.

ARTS

  • Apply skills in dance, music, theatre and visual arts
  • Use the artistic processes of creating, performing/presenting, and responding to demonstrate thinking skills in dance, music, theatre and visual arts
  • Communicate through the arts
  • Make connections within and across the arts to other disciplines, life, cultures and work

 

Physical Education

  • Evaluate activities and their impact at different stages of life. • Find activities to do outside of school to remain active.
  • Design and implement a personal fitness and nutrition plan.

HEALTH 

  • Advocate for personal, family and community health. • Analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors.
  • Use decision-making skills to enhance health.

PREPARE FOR SUCCESS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND 

  • The transition to high school can be challenging for students and families. Remember, parents play an important role in student success
  • Grades are important- 9th grade is a critical year. Talk to your student about GPA credits and graduation requirements.
  • Talk about classes and activities that interest your student. Find activities that mirror these interests.
  • Ask your student questions about career fields that interest them, research these interests together.
  • Explore post secondary education options- 2 year, 4 year, technical, apprenticeship and military.
  • Start talking about ways to pay for college- loans, grants, scholarships.
  • Help your student make connections -volunteer, job shadow, visit college campuses – to explore post secondary options. Your school counselor and college and career center in your school can help.

Students who maintain good attendance through all years of school:

  • Achieve grade-level standard at a higher rate.
  • Graduate from high school at a higher rate.
  • Develop good habits that contribute to success in school and in future careers.

It takes an average of three days to catch up for each day a student is absent.
