Next fall, we plan to reopen schools for in-person instruction five full days a week for students in K through grade 12, and half days for PreK, as long as public health authorities continue to support in-person learning.
As recommended by the CDC and Washington State Department of Health, we will require three-foot distancing, face masks and other safety measures.
Families who choose not to send their student for in-person learning due to a family health concern will be able to select a remote learning option.
Elementary Remote Option
Elementary students choosing remote instruction will be assigned to an online classroom that will likely include students from other schools. The teacher may also be from another school. Students will continue to be affiliated with the school where they are now enrolled and will be invited to participate in that school's activities throughout next year.
The elementary remote option will be available only for 2021-22 school year.
For the 2022-23 school year, elementary students will return to in-person instruction. Students going into grades 4 and 5 will have a remote option for learning through the Highline Virtual Academy.
Secondary Remote Option
Students receiving special education services in our EBC, IAC and ILC programs who wish to remain remote will attend classes via Zoom with their in-person peers.
Middle and high school students who want remote instruction may apply to Highline Virtual Academy (HVA). HVA is a new online school that will continue to operate beyond 2021-22 on an ongoing basis. It will offer AP, English language learner and special education services.
HVA instruction will be different from the distance learning students have experienced during the pandemic. Core instruction will be delivered through Edgenuity, an online learning platform. Highline teachers will provide virtual instruction for small group and individual support. Face-to-face weekly virtual sessions with staff and students will address social-emotional learning. Students will be able to participate in athletics and activities in their neighborhood school.
HVA is a Highline choice school. Students must submit an application.
One Year Commitment
Both elementary and secondary students are asked to commit to a year-long remote program; however, they may apply for reassignment to in-person instruction during the 2021-22 school year. Reassignments will be granted if there is space available.
In the next week, you will receive a message asking you to select in-person or remote instruction for the 2021-22 school year. For more information, check our Fall 2021 web page.
