Student Support, Distance Learning & Grades

Here is a family update on supporting students during the school closure, distance learning and grades.

In addition to the learning resource packets distributed at meal sites and online learning resources, we will introduce a plan for distance learning next week. Elementary teachers will communicate with families at least weekly via email or phone. Teachers will also be monitoring email and responding to your messages within 24 hours on school days.

Middle & High School

Due to the sudden school closure ordered by the Governor, we will modify our grading for middle and high school students. For the third quarter, scheduled to end on Friday, April 3, middle and high school teachers will assign all students either a “P” or “NC” mark (passing or no credit).   No letter grades will be assigned.

Supporting Students During Closure

We recognize this emergency school closure has raised concerns about how students will stay on track for graduation. We have a plan to support students so they can graduate prepared for the future they choose.

12th-grade students and families will receive a separate message today outlining support specifically for seniors.

During the school closure, students in grades 6-11 will have their advisory teacher as their primary point of contact. The teacher will check in with your student no later than Wednesday, April 1 to:

  • Check on their physical and emotional wellness - How is the student doing?
  • Confirm they have access to technology (WiFi and computer)

Follow-up check-ins will occur at least every other week to monitor academic progress, review the graduation checklist, check on social./emotional wellness and troubleshoot any needs.

If you have any questions, please contact your student’s advisory teacher, counselor or principal.

High School Schedule

We have decided to stay with the 6-period master schedule rather than transitioning to a 5-period trimester schedule.

After several months of collaboration with high school leaders, we have developed a comprehensive and detailed plan for supporting and strengthening the high school experience. Given our current context in this school closure, this is not the time for our district, staff or students to take on this significant change.

This does not mean we will continue with high school as we know it. Read more.
