This summer, we installed a new concrete ramp to provide ADA access to the main entrance and school office at Hilltop Elementary.
The ramp benefits not only wheelchair users but also those with strollers, walkers, and even the school custodian moving equipment.
“I am so excited about the ramp,” said Hilltop Principal Corbin Busby. “This year, we welcomed a student back to school after a significant accident. He is currently using a wheelchair, and I was so happy that he and his family could use the front door to welcome him back, rather than requiring them to enter through the back of the school.”
Families with strollers also appreciated the ramp and were eager to use it during construction in August.
The project includes sidewalk cutouts to create a clear path from the parking lot to the ramp. We also added a handrail down the center of the existing stairway to meet safety standards and improve accessibility.
A $100,000 ADA Access grant from the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction covers most of the cost.
The project will be completed in October by our Capital Planning & Construction team and contractor, when the existing sidewalk approach to the ramp is leveled.
